Free Cataract Surgery for Eligible Queens and Long Island Residents
Westbury, NY September 4, 2009 — Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island (OCLI) will participate in the Mission Cataract USA program, offering FREE outpatient cataract surgery throughout August and September to residents of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens who are not covered by medical insurance and who are unable to pay for the surgery themselves. Dr. David Nelson is one of several ophthalmologists from OCLI who will donate his time and talents to Mission Cataract USA. A partner in OCLI, Dr. Nelson will perform FREE surgery at the Island Eye Surgicenter to give the gift of sight back to those who have lost some or all of their vision because of cataracts. A resident of Manhattan, Dr. Nelson (http://ocli.net/physicians/ocli-nelson-old.htm) is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology including glaucoma treatments. He received his Medical Degree with honors from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn and completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Nelson is the Medical Director of Island Eye Surgicenter in Carle Place, New York. Dr. Nelson was the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Mercy Medical Center from 1995-1999. Dr. Nelson has served on the faculty at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. In addition, Dr. Nelson has lectured and published extensively on cataract surgery having written two chapters in textbooks about cataracts.
OCLI has performed charitable surgical procedures for many years with various local service organizations including The Lion’s Eye Bank and The Sons of Italy. The procedures will be performed at no cost at the Island Eye Surgicenter in Carle Place.
